Ülemiste City and Tehnopolis
Ülemiste City’s project for advertising directional signs reached us through a design office that, in addition to support for ideas, wanted a partner with production knowledge. From the different concepts discussed the idea capable of being produced and most suited to the client’s need was chosen.
In addition to finalising design and carrying out construction, the work process included procurement of construction permits. Minor changes were made in the design in later phases to create a more unified appearance for the directional advertisements.
Construction permits were required for the three directional advertisements at the main gateways to the Ülemiste City. The project created a precedent for Estonia and closer region as it consisted of very different stages: geodesic works, excavation, grounding creation, foundation laying, surface restoration and finally the installation of the directional advertisement. The complexity made it more difficult to confirm a schedule for work completion. Accomplishing the task in the Estonian climate with changing weather conditions was a much greater challenge than initially anticipated.
As mentioned, the project was the first of its kind and the technical light solutions involved two different types of profiles produced by Volume Design – Ülemiste City logos used profile L10 and the light belt profile L4.
The profiles were offered exactly as they appear in the Ülemiste City today. The design of the large directional advertisements near roads with high density traffic took into consideration the requirement of easy cleaning.
The end result consists of three identical directional advertisements located at the three main gateways to the Ülemiste City.
