Actively contributing to the reduction of the environmental impact of its general economic activities, Volume Design decided to start reducing the carbon footprint of its products and daily operations in the new production building. The first major step on this path is the construction of a solar power station on the roof of the production building.
The imminent construction of the solar station was already foreseen during the design and construction of the building, where the design of the roof structures is considering the additional load of the solar station. The station is planned to be built in two stages. The total capacity of the station considers the current and future electricity needs of Volume Design but is limited by the usable roof area. By utilising the entire roof area, it is possible to cover 70–80% of the total demand with the produced solar energy.
The design and procurements of the first stage of the solar station were carried out immediately after the construction of the new production building was finished – in May-June 2020. The technology provider was chosen, and the contract was signed in August. First solar power was produced and provided into grid October 29.
The installed capacity of the first stage is 65.7 kW and the most modern LONGi Solar PERC single-sided monocrystal panels were used. These panels were considered to have the best efficiency indicators according to the TÜV Rheinland test 2020. It is estimated that the first phase of the solar station will cover about 40% of the annual electricity consumption of Volume Design (see diagram below).
The long-term strategy of Volume Design envisages a gradual and conscious reduction of the environmental impact of its production and all associated economic activities through the use of renewable energy and raw materials economy in production; waste reduction and management; transport logistics management and the daily office life of its employees.
